Salmonella
A Salmonella bacterial infection can cause fever, diarrhea, and cramps. Most people get over the illness on their own after a few days, but the usual folks (infants, elderly, those with weak immune systems) are at risk for potentially deadly complications. One usually gets Salmonella by eating foods contaminated with animal feces, often raw meat or eggs. However all foods can be contaminated (for instance by unwashed hands or dirty kitchens). Cooking food kills the bacteria.
According to the CDC, 'it is estimated that approximately 600 persons die each year with acute salmonellosis.'
